      At Oceanside Physiotherapy, Alannah is our trained pelvic health physiotherapist. Patients that struggle with urinary incontinence or an overactive bladder, may find relief from pelvic floor physiotherapy. Alannah has specialized training to treat these concerns.

      Certain stages in a women’s life can benefit from pelvic floor rehabilitation. Prenatal and postpartum care such as pregnancy-related pelvic girdle pain, pubic symphysis pain, coccyx pain, preparation for labour and delivery, c-section scar management, and diastasis rectus abdominis are treatable. Genitourinary syndrome of menopause is another special concern we can address. Various pelvic pain conditions such as dyspareunia (painful intercourse), vaginismus, endometriosis, vulvodynia, and vestibulodynia can also benefit from pelvic physiotherapy.

      What does pelvic floor physiotherapy involve?

      A pelvic floor assessment will include a combination of the following:

      • a detailed history of your symptoms;
      • a physical exam including observation, ROM, and strength testing, as required;
      • a digital vaginal and/or rectal examination of the perineum.

      The assessment methods selected are determined by your comfort and informed consent. Informed consent can be withdrawn at any time during the assessment. Upon completion of your initial assessment, you will be provided with education regarding your condition. At the same time, you will be given advice and recommendations on how to manage it in the short and long term.

      Alannah provides hands-on treatment including, manual therapy, myofascial release, GUNN IMS (dry needling) and home exercises to help manage and resolve your symptoms. For more information or to book your 1 hour initial consultation, please feel free to contact us at (250) 248-9666.

      Pelvic exams are safe in early pregnancy but generally, we treat women from 12 weeks to 38 weeks of gestation.

      2. I am due to deliver soon, how soon postpartum can I have a pelvic floor check?
      Generally, we recommend checking the pelvic floor at 6-8 weeks postpartum. If you have specific goals or significant symptoms before this time, be sure to contact us for more detailed advice.

      3. I have my period, do I have to cancel my pelvic floor appointment?
      We are happy to proceed as normal with treatment when you are menstruating. We can choose alternative treatments if you do not feel comfortable with internal treatment while menstruating. If you prefer, we are happy to reschedule your appointment.
